Chapter Eleven

* * *

Grace moved to the couch as she listened to the whole story. Her hands clasped and unclasped in her lap, but there was little else to give away her emotions. Her gaze was steady and her voice didn't, again, waver.

When Chris finished, she just sat quietly, looking at the floor. It felt like minutes to Kit, who stood back, her heart in her throat. She couldn't even imagine what the woman was feeling.

"How long have you been with David?" Claire asked, breaking the silence.

Kit glanced over at her, nodding her approval of the question. If the girl—heck, she wasn't a girl, she looked to be in her mid to late forties, quite a bit older than David now that she thought about it—if Grace had only been with David a short time, then it might not be as big a deal.

Grace didn't flinch. "Almost two years, longer than you and Chris have known each other.” Zing. "No offense," she added.

"None taken,” Claire said. “Obviously David talks to you about all of us, but not about you to all of us. I suppose that doesn't surprise anyone who knows him."

Grace nodded, even smiled a bit.

Somehow, the wall came down. When Grace spoke again, there was more emotion in her voice. "I want to see the video," she said, rising from the couch, then added, "please."

Almost imperceptibly, both Eric and Chris shook their heads. Claire rose to Grace's defense. "Guys, show her the feed."

Amazingly, both men jumped to comply.

"It's on the table," Cruz said, escorting Grace to a chair. Before he turned the laptop toward her, he crouched down, looking at her very directly. "Grace, are you sure? It's not easy to watch."

As Kit watched, Grace responded by leaning forward a bit, closer to Cruz. He reached over and touched her shoulder.

Okay, the man was awesome. Without thinking, without effort. It was what she'd mistaken for him being a player, wasn't it?

People simply responded to him. He oozed something...a genuine something. Idly, Kit wondered if he had that same way with men. Amazingly though, it was a quality that she found more and more irresistible.

Grace took a deep breath, looking unwaveringly at him.

"I'm ready."

Cruz moved a chair right up next to her, again the proximity thing, then turned the laptop around.

Grace held her hands to her mouth. For a moment, it was as if she couldn't tear her eyes away. But then, she turned, breathing hard, one hand still over her mouth, the other grasping the edge of the table.

Kit felt obliged to look away, to give Grace some semblance of privacy to process her pain. She caught Cruz's green gaze, filled with his own anguish.

At last, Grace took another deep breath and sat up straight. "Is there worse?" she asked, looking right at Cruz.

He flinched, weighed his options. "Yes," he said evenly.

"Then I need to see it."

"Grace," he plead.

"I need to know."

"Couldn't we just tell you?" Claire suggested.

Grace shook her head, her hands gripped tightly on her lap. "I need to know if I'm up to it, if I can be the person he'll need when this is done.
